THREE Indonesian canoe athletes, Dayumin, Nur Meni, and Sella Monim, are trying to win tickets to the 2024 Paris Olympics through qualifying rounds taking place at the Asian Sprint Canoe Championship and the 2024 ACC (Asian Canoe Confederation) Olympic Qualification.

Dayumin will appear in the women’s 200 meter individual event, while Nur Meni and Sella Monim will compete in the women’s 500 meter double canoe event at the championship which will take place at the Sea Forest Waterway in Tokyo Bay, Japan on April 18-21.

“Dayumin showed a promising performance during four weeks of training with Georgian national athletes (East-Europe/West-Asia) and Ukrainian Olympic medalists in Antalya (Turkey), March 6 to April 3. He then continued training in Cipule (West Java) ,” said Kano Indonesia coach for women’s individual numbers, Andrii Kraitor, quoted from an official statement, Monday (15/4).

The Russian coach assessed that Dayumin was able to overcome resistance from tough competitors such as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Thailand and Iran in the competitions he participated in.

Meanwhile, the ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics for the women’s 500 meter canoe-doubles event also has the potential to be sealed by women’s doubles Nur Meni and Seila Monim. The Indonesian canoe coach for the women’s 500 meter doubles, Andri, is confident that his team will be able to secure tickets to Paris even though they have just been formed as a team.

“Even though Meni and Sella are a new pair with no competition experience, while training in Antalya, both of them made rapid progress so they have a chance,” said Andri.

Apart from sending three canoe athletes who have the opportunity to seal Olympic tickets, the Executive Board of the Indonesian Rowing Sports Association (PB PODSI) also sent five other female canoe rowing athletes who will also compete in Japan.

The five athletes are Ramla from Batupapan (South Sulawesi), Cinta Priendtisca Nayomi from Jakarta (DKI Jakarta), Herlin Aprilin Lali from Hobong (Papua), Sri Kandi from Renda Island (Sultra), and Nurevani Feraliana from Garut (West Java). (Ant/Z-1)
