Three times more expensive iPhone 14 to use LG front lens-ePrice.HK

South Korean news site ET News broke the news yesterday that Apple has finalized two manufacturers, South Korea’s LG Innotek and Japan’s Sharp, to provide front-facing selfie camera lenses for the iPhone 14. Reports say LG Innotek has beaten Chinese suppliers, and Apple originally planned to switch to LG parts for next year’s iPhone 15, but has now moved ahead a year.

Concerned regarding the quality of Chinese suppliers

The report cited Apple’s redefinition of the front-facing camera as a “high-end” part as the reason for the advance, and concerns over the quality of Chinese suppliers. However, the new front-facing camera is said to cost almost three times as much as older iPhone models. Well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in mid-April that the front-facing cameras of all four models of the iPhone 14 series will be upgraded with F/1.9 aperture and autofocus, the first time ever for an iPhone.

Shooting, video calls are also improved

A larger aperture allows light to enter, improving image quality. Ming-Chi Kuo said that the iPhone 14’s front-facing camera upgrade will also improve the depth of field effect in portrait shooting mode, while autofocus will help with the focusing ability during FaceTime and Zoom video calls. ET News pointed out that LG Innotek is already preparing for production to meet the production needs of the iPhone 14.
