In the Saratov region, the rates of thyroid diseases among both children and adults are higher than the average for Russia. Mikhail Svinarev, Deputy Chief Physician of the Saratov Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital, told about this during today’s briefing.

“The incidence of the disease in our region is slightly higher than the national average, because we have proven the presence of natural iodine deficiency, which is more pronounced in areas with a relatively high altitude. We still have certain mountains on the Right Bank, albeit small ones. It is clear that in our country the incidence will be less than in the Caucasus. Our incidence has been higher for decades,” the speaker explained.

Thyroid problems are observed in 5% of the child population. These patients require dispensary observation.

“If we talk about the extreme variants of pathologies, which include thyroid cancer, both in the child population and in the adult population, the incidence in the Saratov region is absolutely average for Russia,” Svinarev said.

According to him, the cause of thyroid problems is iodine deficiency. “To say that iodine deficiency will lead to cancer is absolutely wrong,” the speaker added.

In the adult population of the Saratov region, the main pathology, indicating problems with the thyroid gland, is nodular goiter. It manifests itself in the fact that the thyroid gland increases in size and there are areas of uneven accumulation and functioning. This may be due to age characteristics. The presence of a goiter does not indicate the need for surgical intervention, but it is necessary to be treated and observed by a doctor.

About 10 patients who have problems with the thyroid gland are operated on every year.

In order for the thyroid gland to function properly, it is necessary to consume iodine. The easiest way is to consume iodized salt, the expert advised.
