The three-dimensional scan of the Titanic which took place this month revealed new secrets of the cruise ship that sank more than a century ago after hitting an iceberg. Among the wreckage of the ship, the researchers managed to find a necklace made with a tooth of a prehistoric sharkthe megalodon, and pieces of gold.

The finding was announced by the company Magellanwho digitally recreated the ship, thanks to two small submarines that captured some 700,000 images of the wreckage of the Titanic, which was later turned into a moving scan.

Magellan’s CEO, Richard Parkinsondescribed the discovery of the necklace as something “amazing, beautiful and impressive”. “The Titanic is divided into two parts and there is a three square mile debris field between the bow and the stern,” Parkinson explained. “The team mapped the field in such detail that we were able to identify those details,” she congratulated herself.

However, the necklace will remain at the bottom of the sea: an agreement between the United Kingdom and the United States prevents taking any part of the ship or what surrounds you. The remains of the cruise rest about 400 nautical miles from Newfoundland, in Canada.

Despite this, the company wants to know more about this necklace and meet its owner, as well as its possible heirs. To do this, Magellan is using artificial intelligence in order to locate and contact the relatives of the 2,200 passengers aboard the Titanic when it sank.

In addition, they are analyzing archive images of the passengers when they boarded with facial recognition systems and in order to identify the clothes they were wearing and see if any of them were wearing the necklace.

Mandy Le Boutillier, a British researcher, maintained that the quality of the images created had never been seen before. “It is chilling to see objects like a pair of shoes, because there was once a body there. She makes you think: everyone talks about the Titanic being a wonderful dream ship, but in the background is a grave”, he highlighted in dialogue with the channel itv.

Jan Eliassen, the captain of the MV Freja vessel that took the images, said it was exciting to be involved in the project. “I don’t think you can really understand what it’s like in the dead of night, when the ship you’re on sinks under you and goes into the water,” he said.
