to be able to say things to one’s face

The second United States Africa Summit opened on Tuesday, December 13 in Washington. The leaders of the 49 invited countries will be able to meet and discuss for three days. The Biden administration wants the broadest discussion possible.

Leaders from 49 countries are invited, and the State Department insists that even countries with poor relations have been invited. It’s about being able to say things to each other with respect.

The list of countries that are not there corresponds to those that are suspended by the African Union because of military coups. This is the case of Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Sudan. In addition, Eritrea and Western Sahara do not have diplomatic relations with the United States.

All these leaders will have the opportunity to discuss with the United States and also between them, a number of bilateral meetings are planned.

The discussion topics are also very broad. This Tuesday alone, forums on space cooperation, health, climate change, peace and security as well as governance were planned.

This Wednesday, we will talk about the economy, since a business forum is planned with a first intervention by President Biden. It is Thursday that he will receive the leaders present at the White House.

A mark of friendship to show, without really saying it, that as Russia and China expand their influence on the continent, Africa is also important to the United States.
