'Told Shahrukh Khan to give National Award to Mohanlal' CB Malayil's disclosure

Jury member and director CB Malail revealed that the Malayalam movie ‘Paradesi’ was left out in the 2009 National Film Awards. Paradesi written and directed by PT Kunju Muhammad starring Mohanlal in the lead role was a much talked about movie.

CB Malail said that even though Mohanlal could have won awards for his performance in the film, PT Kunju Muhammad for directing, Rafiq Ahmed for songwriting and Sujata Mohan for singing, Pattanam Rasheed only won the award for best make-up. CB Malayil’s reaction was while inaugurating a cultural fair being held at Sahitya Akademi on the life of PT Kujunmuhammed titled ‘PT Kalaum Kalam’.

CB Malail said that the jury had decided to give the award to Shahrukh Khan instead of Mohanlal. He added that the chairman of the jury said that if Shahrukh Khan was given the best actor award instead of Mohanlal, the award distribution program would be smooth.

Sujatha, who sang the song ‘Thattam Dhidi Valikalle Meilanchi Patilaye’ in the film, was considered as the best singer but was dropped at the last minute.
CBI Malail said that PT Kujunmuhammed is one of the Malayalam filmmakers who did not get the recognition he deserved and was sidelined.

Cinematographer Sunny Joseph and I wanted and strongly advocated for ‘Paradesi’ to get awards for director, grooming, songwriting and singer anyway. We were the only Malayalis in the jury.

The Best Female Singer award for Sujatha was decided and written by the committee. But the festival director, a North Indian who had arrived as if for lunch, asked who the award for the singer was.

When he came to know that it was Sujata’s, he asked if she had heard Shreya Ghoshal’s song from ‘Jab V Meti’ and took the initiative to show the video cassette and correct the award. Even though the jury is confidential, this information is now being released because of the passage of time’- said CB Malail. He added that Malayalam filmmakers winning awards competing with North Indians is a big event.

At the same time, in the 55th National Film Awards announced in 2009, Prakash Raj won the best actor award for the movie Kanjeevaram directed by Priyadarshan. As per the jury’s decision, Shreya Ghosh also won the award for the best playback singer who sang the song ‘Yeh Ishq Haye’ from ‘Jab Vi Meti’.
