Celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, the foundational video game franchise returns with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Scheduled for release on February 12, across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2, this modern reintepretation is developed jointly by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, edited by the video game branch of Amazon.
An Enormous Responsibility for the Development Teams
Tackling the very first adventure of gaming’s most recognized heroine carries immense weight. According to Raul Siqueira, director of Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, speaking in an interview with AFP at the Gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany, the team faced « une énorme responsabilité » when modernizing the 1996 classic. Nearly 250 developers worked on the project at its peak over a span of more than three years, rewriting the script and updating dialogues now voiced by British actress Alix Wilton Regan.

Behind the scenes, the development houses—both subsidiaries of the Swedish group Embracer—faced the technical hurdle of updating a title that has undeniably suffered from the passage of time. Art director Arek Tomaszewski noted that playing the original hardware release today presents stark friction points in graphics and character handling.
Modernizing Character Identity and Gameplay Mechanics
During a controlled press and influencer demonstration at Gamescom, attendees viewed a sequence set in an abandoned Greek tomb. Lara Croft navigates environmental obstacles like falling giant blades—which can now be triggered prematurely by gunfire—while managing dynamic combat encounters against panthers, bats, and jaguars.

The character design consciously shifts away from historical marketing tropes. Tomaszewski emphasized that the team aimed to shape Lara into a strong woman rather than a sexualized object of desire. Dialogue lines have been adapted to reflect her complex, nuanced personality without rewriting historical plot points. Old-school traversal mechanics like corner handstands remain intact, alongside dual pistols and a functional shotgun. Combat integration features a slow-motion mechanic reminiscent of bullet-time effects, activated via a dedicated interface meter.
Navigating Franchise Timeline Continuity
Legacy of Atlantis occupies a specific space within the franchise chronology. Following a string of releases including the 2007 remake, the 2013 reboot by Square Enix, and the 2024 remaster, this latest iteration positions Lara at the height of her powers. Siqueira clarified that this is the same character seen in the 2013–2018 survival trilogy, with the new release depicting a mature adventurer operating at her peak performance eight years after Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
While the private demo showcased fluid acrobatic gunplay and dynamic puzzle routing, hands-on observers also noted early physical bugs—such as stray weapon positioning during jumps and unpredictable physics on the protagonist’s braid. With release slated for February 12 preceding a brand-new franchise entry planned for 2028, the studios have an active development runway to resolve these technical anomalies before players step back into the labyrinthine ruins of Atlantis.
