Kroos on Instagram: “Guys, short and painless: I will play for Germany again from March. Why? Because I was asked by the national coach, I’m up for it and I’m sure that a lot more is possible with the team at the European Championships than most people believe at the moment!”
In his podcast “Einfach mal Luppen” Kroos goes into more detail: “For me that’s a point zero. Made 106 international matches. Had great success. But I also had one or two tournaments that didn’t go that way. You shouldn’t forget: I was there in 2018 when we were eliminated in the preliminary round. But also in 2014. That’s why I believe that a second national team career is now starting. And which will then be measured against this European Championship.”

National coach Julian Nagelsmann (36) had already spoken in the ZDF sports studio last December about Kroos’ comeback with a view to the 2024 European Championship and described a return of the Real star as an “interesting thought”. Kroos resigned from the national team after the round of 16 exit at the European Championships in summer 2021 (0-2 against England) and therefore missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In February, the 106-time national player spoke for the first time about returning to the DFB team, saying before Real’s Champions League game at RB Leipzig: “There is the possibility, I’m thinking about it. But I haven’t made a decision yet.”
