Top part of Ramses II’s colossus discovered almost a century after the statue was found
An Egyptian-American archaeological mission discovered the upper part of a colossus of Pharaoh Ramesses II, from the 19th dynasty, in the region of Hermopolis Magna, located in the central province of Minia, almost a hundred years after the discovery of the lower part of the statue.

Archaeologists “managed to unearth the upper part of a huge statue of King Ramesses II” made of limestone and about 3.80 meters high, which represents Pharaoh Ramses II seated and with a double crown decorated with a king cobra, reported this Monday the Ministry of Antiquities.
In the note, the secretary general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mustafa Waziri, highlighted the importance of this discovery, after the archaeological studies carried out demonstrated that it was a part of a piece discovered by the German archaeologist, Günther Roeder, in 1930.
The ministry detailed that the rear column of the newly found upper part presents hieroglyphic writings of titles to glorify the king, and added that the size of the statue could reach about seven meters when both parts are assembled.
In 2018, Egyptian authorities completed work to place a colossus of Pharaoh Ramses II in the main lobby of the new Grand Egyptian Museum, at the foot of the pyramids of Giza, southwest of Cairo, without incident.
Known as Ramses the Great, the third pharaoh of the 19th dynasty of Egypt, who ruled the territory more than 3 thousand years ago, lived 87 years, and built many of the great monuments of Ancient Egypt.
