TotalEnergies to supply 900,000 metric tons of LNG per year to Jiangsu

TotalEnergies SE has secured a major long-term energy agreement to supply liquefied natural gas to China. Under terms announced in a joint statement, Jiangsu Guoxin Group has awarded the French energy major a 15-year contract to deliver 900,000 metric tons per year of liquefied natural gas to the Chinese province.

Deliveries under the accord are scheduled to commence in 2028, pending the finalization of definitive sale and purchase agreements, according to TotalEnergies. Cargoes will arrive directly at the provincial state-owned company’s new LNG terminal in Rudong to support municipal gas distribution and flexible power generation across the region.

Corporate officials noted that Jiangsu ranks as China’s second-largest province by both gross domestic product and natural gas consumption volume. The new arrangement broadens TotalEnergies’ long-term sales footprint in China, which stands as one of the world’s largest importing nations for the super-chilled fuel. This agreement also highlights the role natural gas can play in the energy transition by supporting industrial development and providing greater flexibility for power generation in high-growth provinces such as Jiangsu, said Gregory Joffroy, Senior Vice President, LNG at TotalEnergies. It will also support Jiangsu Province in achieving its carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals and promote high-quality economic development in the province, said Zhang Wenxiang, Deputy General Manager of Jiangsu Guoxin Group.

TotalEnergies Secures Multiyear Liquefied Natural Gas Supply Deals

The latest agreement builds upon an existing Chinese portfolio that includes a 15-year deal announced in November 2024 to supply two million metric tons per annum to state-owned China Petroleum & Chemical Corp, with those shipments also slated to begin in 2028. TotalEnergies also announced a separate five-year agreement to purchase up to 1.6 million metric tons per annum of liquefied natural gas from ADNOC Gas PLC.

Stéphane Michel, president for gas, renewables and power at TotalEnergies, said that the company’s geographical positioning between Europe and Asia reinforces its standing as a primary portfolio supplier. Meanwhile, ADNOC Gas noted that the future integration of the under-construction Ruwais project will significantly increase production capacity to meet growing worldwide demand.

The Ruwais LNG facility, featuring two 4.8-million-metric-tons-per-annum trains, is projected to more than double the United Arab Emirates’ production capacity once operations start in 2028. TotalEnergies holds a 10 percent equity stake in the facility following an acquisition completed in 2024.

Upstream Developments Across Asia

In addition to downstream supply contracts, TotalEnergies has continued expanding its upstream footprint in the region. The company recently announced agreements to acquire a 30 percent operating stake in two offshore gas fields designed to feed the existing Malaysia LNG facility off the coast of Sarawak.
