It starts on Saturday 110. Tour de France. The Tour of France leads this year over 3405,6 km and 21 stages to the traditional finale on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on July 23. The kickoff falls on Saturday with a 182 km long stage Bilbao. It’s the 25th Grand Départ abroad. A total of three days are on the schedule in Spain.

It comes to a new edition of last year’s gripping duel between the defending champions Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo Visma) and Tadej Pogacar. The Dane Vingegaard proved his form at the beginning of June by winning the Dauphiné. Pogacar, 2020 and 2021 Tour champion, is the more explosive rider of the two. At the Slovenian Championships, the captain of the UAE Emirates team returned to racing for the first time since his serious fall in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic at the end of April – and won easily.

The two Swiss
Of the 176 riders tackling the 110th Tour de France in Bilbao on Saturday, are Silvan Dillier (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) the only two Swiss. The last time there were fewer than three Swiss starters was in 1980: the event won by Dutchman Joop Zoetemelk even took place without any Swiss participation at all. Two years later, led by two-time stage winner Beat Breu, there were 17 Swiss participants – that is still the highest number today.
The farewells
On the 2023 tour, some of the really big names will say “Adieu”. sprinter Mark Cavendish contests his last Tour of France and wants to get the sole stage record with another day’s success. The Briton is currently sharing the record with Eddy Merckx (both 34). Also Peter Saganthe record winner of the green jersey (points classification) with seven successes, is making a final appearance.

The men’s final stage marks the start of the 2nd edition of the Tour de France Femmes. From July 23rd to 30th, the women will fight for the Tour victory over 8 stages and a total of 956 kilometers.
