Liane Lippert wins Stage 2 of the Tour de France Femmes. Lotte Kopecky remains overall leader.
Liane Lippert has won stage two of the women’s Tour de France and secured her first ever World Tour victory. The 25-year-old from Team Movistar sprinted ahead of the Belgian overall leader Lotte Kopecky (SD Worx-Protime) on a classic-like course over 151.7 km from Clermont-Ferrand to Mauriac.
Kopecky’s teammate Marlen Reusser was 4 seconds behind in 13th place, Elise Chabbey was 16th. Reusser secured the maximum points in the last climb with a kilometer to go.
Numerous falls
The race was overshadowed by numerous falls in occasional driving rain. Lippert and world champion Annemiek van Vleuten also fell with 48 km to go. However, both quickly caught up. 7 kilometers before the end of the stage, Eva van Agt fell heavily as a breakaway in a descent, the Dutchwoman slipped under a crash barrier.
The third stage takes the riders on Tuesday over 147.2 km from Collonges-la-Rouge to Montignac-Lascaux.
