Is nail polish toxic?

Although more and more nail polishes claim to contain no toxic ingredients, this statement is simply false, according to Caroline Cormier, chemistry teacher at Cégep André-Laurendeau. “It’s a little bit of marketing,” she says, adding that toxicity is above all a question of dosage.
The professor points out that most nail polishes from major brands already offer products that are free of hazardous materials.
“All the ingredients [dans un vernis à ongles] should not be eaten,” insists Caroline Cormier. People who are in the habit of biting their nails should therefore be careful when grooming themselves.
