Toyota’s $50 Million Investment in Battery Lab to Drive Electric Vehicle Innovation

Toyota is investing almost 50 million US dollars in a new battery laboratory. This is to be built at the research and development headquarters in York Township and go into operation in 2025.

The investment represents Toyota’s “shift towards electrification,” said Shinichi Yasui, Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) vice president, research and development. The aim is to evaluate the development of batteries for electric vehicles – from the cell to the package. This is intended to support Toyota’s battery plant in North Carolina and the recently announced production of BEV SUVs in Kentucky.

“With these key automotive battery evaluation capabilities, our team is positioned to better serve the needs of our customers, including Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky, where the announced three-row electric SUV will soon be assembled,” so Yasui further.

The new battery lab team will also work with North American suppliers to integrate locally produced battery components and materials. In addition to battery development, charging infrastructure is also to be evaluated in the laboratory. In addition, the chassis dynamometers at Toyota’s research and development sites in York Township and Ann Arbor will be upgraded to enable the evaluation of BEVs.

In addition to working with current battery production, Toyota says engineers will also research new battery configurations for future products. Among other things, these could contribute to the development of new electrified vehicle architectures by Toyota.

Whether additional tasks and competencies will be assigned to the new battery laboratory in the coming years to “meet the needs of the battery and BEV ecosystem [zu] support”, Toyota is still open.
