A studio created in 1989 by Paul Reiche III, Toys for Bob was bought by Activision in 2005. By extension, when Xbox announced the acquisition of Activision/Blizzard in January 2022, which was validated in October 2023, the American studio of Novato fell into the hands of the Redmond firm. Not for very long since Toys for Bob has just made an important announcement for its future.

Toys for Bob is a studio that has made its mark on several games. Known in the 90s for his work on the Star Control and Pandemonium series (on behalf of Crystal Dynamics), he worked after 2005 on licenses belonging to Activision as part of the takeover, including the Skylanders series, Spyro Reignited Trilogy , Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time and Crash Team Rumble.

At the start of the year, the Activision / Blizzard group was affected by 1,900 layoffs, which must have given many people pause, especially in a context in which other studios are also affected. So the news is out: Toys for Bob announcement become an independent studio again. This return to basics will allow it to remain a small, “agile” studio. The team will develop new stories, new characters and new gameplay experiences. However, the studio is exploring the possibility of working in partnership with Microsoft, which for its part retains the rights to the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro licenses belonging to Activision.
