iOS 16.6 may well be the last version of iOS 16 before iOS 17 comes crashing down. For the occasion Apple might take the opportunity to integrate a security function announced last December: the verification of the ignition keys for iMessage. The first beta of iOS 16.6 contains a “Contact Key Verification” tweak that doesn’t currently lead anywhere, but it’s a sign that Apple is working on it.
Once configured, Ignition Key Verification for iMessage will ensure that user messages are only sent to the people they are intended for. Automatic alerts will be displayed in the event that a ” exceptionally sophisticated threat » — Apple cite a state-sponsored attack — would manage to reach the servers and implant bugging devices. Users will be able to compare contact verification codes themselves.
This feature is intended for users exposed to serious digital threats, such as journalists, human rights defenders and members of government. The other features unveiled at the end of last year have since become available, whether it’s support for 2FA security keys or advanced data protection for iCloud.
