Trade Republic has introduced a new scanning feature allowing users to photograph invoices, upload payment documents, or scan QR-Codes to automatically populate transfer forms with IBANs and payment details.
The Bottom Line
- Trade Republic rolls out photo and QR-code capture for transfer forms, removing the need for manual data entry.
- Consumer warnings emphasize that automated text recognition can misread low-quality documents and does not verify the authenticity of fraudulent invoices.
Camera Scans Replace Manual IBAN Entry
Paying regular bills via bank transfer often exposes users to manual transcription errors involving long account numbers and payment references. To address this friction, the platform now lets cleared customers capture bills with a smartphone camera, upload saved documents, or scan payment QR codes directly inside the application.
The software extracts the IBAN and available payment details, transferring them straight into the payment screen. Users navigate to the transfer menu, select sending to a new IBAN, and activate the scan option. The system requires manual verification and final confirmation of all details before money leaves the account.
Community Response and Consumer Warnings
User demand for invoice scanning and QR-code processing had grown online prior to the rollout. By October 26, community members reported the feature was live, with one user exclaiming on Reddit, “Ich bin ja begeistert”.
Despite the convenience for long IBANs and complex payment references, automated text recognition does not guarantee accuracy. The Spanish consumer portal Roams notes that unclear documents or incomplete payment details demand careful review of the recipient name, account connection, amount, and reference text. Automated capture also fails to flag fraudulent invoices directed to malicious accounts.
Expansion Beyond Traditional Brokerage
This scanning upgrade forms part of Trade Republic’s broader transition into an everyday banking provider. Moving beyond core securities trading and automated savings plans, the company now offers checking accounts and payment cards, systematically closing feature gaps relative to established retail banks.
