A widower whose wife died after she fell ill during her dream vacation at a five-star resort in Cape Verde is now one of 350 guests taking legal action against the exclusive hotel. What happened? This is the story of the 62-year-old British woman who lost her life after contracting a mysterious illness from a bacterium. The case continues to be investigated to determine the cause of death.

Jane Pressley, of Gainsborough, England, travels with her husband Michael for a two-week holiday to celebrate her birthday in November of last year. What better gift to celebrate her 62nd birthday.

Two days into her stay, the mother of two, who would also become a first-time grandmother, fell ill with gastric and flu-like symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea.

After returning home, Jane’s illness worsened and she was admitted to hospital, where she died in January. “While nothing will bring her back,” her husband said, “we need some answers.” It is the least we deserve.

It comes after British tourists reported cases of illness at the hotel late last year, with visitors claiming they had been served what appeared to be raw chicken and food covered in flies, as well as reporting a strong smell of sulfur, according to .

DIED AFTER BECOMING ILL IN LUXURY RESORT

During their stay, both Jane and Michael became ill. Although she recovered within a week, Jane, who had a pre-existing condition of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, was still in extremely poor condition.

After the couple returned home, Jane’s illness worsened and she was taken to the hospital on Christmas Eve.

The doctors who treated her suspected that she had a bacterial infection, so they gave her antibiotics. She tragically died less than two weeks later, on January 5, at age 62.

On his death certificate, his cause of death was confirmed to be “infectious exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease”.

“We thought they would give him some antibiotics and he would be fine. Seeing her die in a few weeks is hard to accept, ”said her husband. “It has been less than six months since we lost Jane and every day it is a struggle to understand what happened. Losing her so suddenly has devastated us all,” she explained.

LEGAL ACTIONS AGAINST THE HOTEL

After her death, 62-year-old Michael instructed Irwin Mitchell’s lawyers, who have now commenced a case against the resort in connection with Jane’s illness and death, as well as Michael’s illness.

Jatinder Paul, an international injury lawyer at the firm representing Michael, said: “The first-hand account we have heard from Michael of the illness he and Jane suffered while on holiday is very concerning.

In November last year, reports surfaced of other hotel guests suffering from gastric illness.

“We represent more than 350 people who became seriously ill at this hotel in 2022. Therefore, this latest development is of great concern. The impact of such diseases should never be minimized as they can lead to long-term health problems and in some cases can prove fatal,” Paul told .

Then 80 British tourists who had stayed at the hotel between May and October 2022 were said to take action after their dream trip turned into a “holiday from hell”.

“While nothing will make up for the loss of Michael, we are now investigating how he and Jane became ill and the events leading up to Jane’s death. If during the course of our investigation any problems are identified, it is vital that lessons are learned to prevent other tourists from becoming ill, or worse, in the future.”
