Two Senegalese sailors have disappeared at sea off the Basque coast, and the chances of finding them alive are slim.
A fishing boat, the Cycnos, ran aground in Ciboure, near Biarritz, in the Basque Country. A distress call was made during the night from Thursday to Friday, at 1:46 a.m. Significant emergency resources were deployed, but a tragedy could not be avoided. Two sailors are missing. Rescuers managed to get into the water despite difficult weather conditions to save a third man, aged 37. They were able to make contact with one of the two other victims, without being able to recover her. Searches interrupted. Drones and a gendarmerie helicopter were deployed to search for the two Senegalese sailors, aged 30 and 58. But they had to stop the search this Friday morning as the weather was still bad. “The chances of finding them alive became almost zero,” explains an officer. Debris and fishing gear are still adrift. An investigation has been opened to determine the causes of the accident, the most serious since 2020 in this area.
