Tragedy Strikes: Hamas Leader’s Children Killed in Israeli Attack

Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh said Wednesday that three of his children and several grandchildren were killed in an Israeli attack on Gaza, where the war has raged for more than six months.

The political head of the Palestinian terrorist group confirmed to the Al Jazeera network the “martyrdom” of his “three children” and some of his “grandchildren.”

“Thank God for the honor of my 3 children and 3 grandchildren becoming martyrs,” he said in a statement to Qatari television. “With this pain and blood we create hope, a future and freedom for our people, our cause and our nation.”

According to Al Jazeera, a drone hit the family’s car in the Al-Shati refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip.

Haniyeh himself, who now lives in Qatar and is originally from Al Shati, explained that his children were visiting relatives in the camp when they were attacked.

Speaking from a Doha hospital where he was told of the attack, Haniyeh was defiant.

He argued that by attacking the relatives of Hamas leaders, “the (Israeli) occupation believes… will break the resolve of our people.”

But, according to Haniyeh, such actions would fail to force Hamas to participate in negotiations toward a truce and the release of hostages.

“All our people and all the families of Gaza have paid a high price in blood, and I am one of them,” Haniyeh added.

Haniyeh also accused Israel of killing his children in a “spirit of revenge and murder.”

The Israeli Army has not yet confirmed the attack, which took place during Eid al-Fitr, or the Festival of Fasting, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The head of the Hamas political bureau said that at least 60 members of his family have died since the war in Gaza began.

In a statement, the Gazan government, controlled by Hamas, confirmed that five people were killed and several others were injured in an Israeli attack on a car carrying several of Haniyeh’s children and grandchildren, although it did not give names.

“We call on all countries in the free world to stop this aggressive war by putting pressure on the criminal occupation and ending its continued aggression against our Palestinian people,” the group said.

The deaths were also confirmed by Hamas’ Al-Aqsa television station, as well as by members of the Haniyeh family on social media.

The attack comes when Hamas is studying the latest truce proposal resulting from negotiations in Cairo, which according to Israeli media would allow the release of 40 hostages in Gaza in exchange for a temporary ceasefire and the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
