Caterina Giovinazzo (88) from the Italian town of Camporosso wasn’t just shocked by her water supplier’s bill. The fact that 7,669 euros had already been debited from her account literally pulled the rug out from under her feet. With a first installment of 7,669 euros being debited, all of Caterina’s savings were used up in one fell swoop.

A spokesman for the company: “We sometimes check invoices using artificial intelligence.” The program did not notice that Caterina Giovinazzo allegedly used a whopping 4,182 cubic meters of water between August and October. That would have been 4,182,000 liters of water.
Calculated differently: With their water consumption of over 4 million liters, two Olympic swimming pools with a depth of two meters could have been filled.

Grandma Caterina’s brother Rocco Giovinazzo reported the matter to the responsible utility company: “The employee compared the data and found that the information on the bill did not match.”
After checking, it turned out that the old woman actually owed the waterworks just 55 euros. The difference was transferred back to her account.
There was also an apology on top of that. For a mistake that cost Grandma Caterina her life.
