Birthday present detonated – army chief Salushni’s advisor killed
Major Gennady Chastiakov is said to have shown his son some grenades that had been given to him for his birthday. He accidentally deactivated the grenade. The child was injured.

The adviser to the Ukrainian army commander Valery Zalushni was killed.
He is said to have deactivated a grenade on his birthday.
It detonated and killed him.
One one Advisor to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian army was killed on Monday when one of his birthday presents exploded. A “unknown explosive device in one of his gifts” was detonated, army chief Valeri Saluschni said on the Telegram online service. His assistant and close friend Gennady Tschastiakov was “killed under tragic circumstances (…) on his birthday”.
As Interior Minister Igor Klimenko also explained on Telegram, Chastiakov showed his son a box of grenades that he had received as a gift. «First the son took the ammunition in his hand and began to turn the ring. Then the military man took the grenade away from him and pulled the ring, which led to an (…) explosion,” Klimenko explained.
A soldier identified
The police say they have identified a soldier who is said to have given Chastiakov the fatal gift. An investigation has been initiated.
Saluzhnyj praised that since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Chastiakov has “fully dedicated his life to the armed forces of Ukraine and the fight against Russian aggression.” The man killed leaves behind a wife and four children.
