The boat that set off from Tunisia was carrying migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, with 40 people on board who are now missing.

The spokeswoman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Italy, Chiara Cardoletti, confirmed to AFP on Friday that regarding forty people were missing following a migrant boat sank Thursday off the small Italian island of Lampedusa.

Cardoletti wrote in a tweet on Twitter that at least one newborn was among the missing.

For his part, Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration, told AFP that the boat that set off from Tunisia was carrying migrants from sub-Saharan Africa.
