Transforming Brussels: Sustainable Housing Units and Renovations for a Bright Future

2023-10-18 17:00:00

The city of Brussels has built 444 accessible sustainable housing units since the start of the legislature.

More than 1000 homes have also been renovated according to Lydia Mutyebele Ngoi – Alderwoman for Housing, Public Heritage and Equal Opportunities: “we have a lot of properties that need to be renovated but we have a multi-year renovation plan. Everything is planned. Since the start of the legislature, we have been awarding contracts. We renovate the interior of our apartments following each re-rental and the exterior of our buildings, i.e. the frames, the roof, the facade, we insulate. We want to make our park completely new, renovated and sustainable.”

A long process that takes time

When a building is listed, even if you want to touch a brick, you can’t do things the way you want. We must respect certain urban planning standards to renovate listed buildings. Service providers aren’t rushing around either, it’s difficult to find good people so it also takes time. But we continue to renovate our buildings.” according to Lydia Mutyebele Ngoi – Alderwoman for Housing, Public Heritage and Equal Opportunities
