Yellow stars are a symbol that began to be used in Argentina to remember victims of traffic accidents.

The national campaign was born from the initiative of Silvia Gonzalez de la Pampa, after the death of his son Sacha Viguera in a road accident.

The actions of the organization, which has hundreds of members in the provinces, include carrying out dissemination campaigns, organizing talks and educational workshops in schools and communitiesthe installation of road signs at strategic points, and providing psychological and emotional support to affected families.

In Río Negro, behind each tribute is a group of volunteers who lost loved ones in road accidents and work to be a beacon of awareness about the importance of road safety and work in the territory.

From Saturday to last Wednesday, in Viedma, a meeting organized by the Yellow Stars Foundation of Río Negro in collaboration with the municipality, the local road safety agency and National Highways. “They were days of work and reflection on the importance of taking concrete actions,” said Thelma Águila, one of its members.

Throughout the year, the organization works in holding informative talks, work sessions and coordination with civil society organizations and governments.

A culture of respect and responsibility must be promoted in all road actors, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Thelma Eagle. Member of the Association.

«In the region and in the country, the most pending issues in terms of road safety are the education and awareness of drivers, the control and compliance with traffic rules, adequate road infrastructure and the implementation of road safety policies. effective,” Águila added.

From the Foundation they assure that the primary need lies in fofoster a culture of respect and responsibility in all road actors, including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

In Argentina, every year about 4,000 people die in traffic accidents. Although many provinces have reduced the number of road accidents, it continues to be the main cause of violent deaths in the country, even higher than incidents of insecurity, according to the report from the Early Warning System (SAT) on Road Deaths. “Many people do not enter the statistics because they do not die instantly. It is estimated that the figure amounts to 8,000 deaths annually,” adds Águila.

Furthermore, they consider that it is necessary to unify regulations at the national level and the total adherence of the municipalities to the National Traffic Law. “This would allow us to avoid the issuance of driving licenses outside the guidelines stipulated by the authorities,” they pointed out.

The role of the school:

Thelma Aguila assures that educational institutions play a fundamental role. «From a young age you have to start working on traffic rules, the risks associated with irresponsible driving and the importance of respecting road signs,” he indicated.

More municipalities join the Zero Alcohol project:

During the last few months, more municipalities in the province joined the project that proposes zero tolerance for alcohol on the streets. This measure is already applied on national routes.

«It is a regulation that we want to be replicated soon in all the municipalities of the country. It is proven that it helps a lot to prevent road accidents and encourages us to work in the educational field,” said Thelma.
