The jurors of the Hainaut Assize Court, in Mons, delivered their verdict on Wednesday in the trial of Brussels resident Mickaël Van Haute, aged 30. The man is found guilty of the murder and rape of Néva, aged 22 months, committed in Frameries on the night of February 1 to 2, 2021.

Mickaël Van Haute was responsible on February 1, 2021 for looking after his partner’s two daughters while the latter was in hospital. The man had consumed alcohol and cocaine and no longer responded to calls and messages from his partner, who was very worried. The next day, the accused, panicked, called his godmother telling her that Neva was no longer moving and that she was dead. A doctor pronounced the child dead, lying on a couch. He concluded that the death was suspicious, due to bruising on the victim’s head and body.

An investigation was then opened. The forensic examination concluded that death was caused by head trauma, a consequence of the blows received to the head. Traces of sexual abuse were also noted.

During the investigation, Mickaël Van Haute had delivered several different versions to the investigators, but none matched the forensic examination. During the first day of the trial, he said he got angry at Neva, who was crying. He also said he no longer remembers the details, due to his condition. He denied rape.

On Wednesday, jurors found him guilty. The medical examiner’s report mentions multiple traces of blows, injuries to the heart, lungs, stomach, liver and eyes. The jurors believe that the intention to kill is established.

Concerning the rape, the anal and vaginal lesions demonstrate that there was penetration “with an unknown means but which can only be attributed to the accused, because they are concomitant with the murder”.
