Trump Appoints Hardliner Stephen Miller as White House Chief of Staff

Stephen Miller, the 41-year-old architect of Donald Trump’s hardline immigration policies and a leading figure of the radical conservative movement, has been appointed White House Chief of Staff. The move, announced on Friday, signals a sharp shift toward confrontation following the Republican Party’s defeat in the midterm elections.

Replacing Susie Wiles at the Helm

Miller takes over the influential post from Susie Wiles on Monday. Susie Wiles, 69, is called to occupy other functions in the billionaire’s orbit, outside the government. According to a White House source, the chief of staff submitted her resignation on Thursday evening.

President Donald Trump praised his incoming chief of staff as a true fighter who has remained loyal since the beginning. While Trump commended Wiles for doing an excellent job, he indicated a willingness to confrontation following the midterm results. Susie Wiles, the first woman to occupy her post, wrote on X that her role might change but her commitment to the president and his mission will never change. She was treated recently for breast cancer, announcing in September that she is cured.

Those elections saw the Democratic Party secure control of Congress. The outcome was widely interpreted as a direct rebuke of the first two years of Trump’s second term, particularly the aggressive deportation campaigns. Vice President JD Vance wrote on X that Stephen Miller is a tremendous patriot who will do great things.

The Ideological Engine of the White House

Often described as the brains behind the administration’s immigration strategy, Miller has long championed the view that demographic shifts threaten Western civilization. He first gained national prominence during Trump’s first term as an architect of restrictions targeting travelers from several Muslim-majority nations. Before that, David Horowitz, an influential conservative ideologue, offered him his entry ticket into ultraconservative circles, where he crossed paths with figures like Steve Bannon and Tucker Carlson before joining Donald Trump’s first campaign at age 30.

Records cited by financial and political publications indicate he directed immigration enforcement agencies to accelerate removal operations when daily expulsion figures lagged behind previous benchmarks. According to the Wall Street Journal, it was Stephen Miller who, in May 2025, gave the order to ICE, the immigration police, to redouble efforts when daily expulsion numbers proved lower than those recorded the previous year under Joe Biden.

Kevin McCarthy, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, said of him to the New York Times just before the Republican president’s inauguration in January 2025: Stephen Miller is Trump’s brain. His influence is even described as tentacular by the untranslated book “Regime Change”, which depicts a man quick to come down hard on his teams. Born in California to a Jewish family whose parents attended prestigious universities, Stephen Miller rather had the profile of a future Democratic voter, but as early as high school and then at Duke University in North Carolina, he provocatively defended radical right-wing ideas.

Democratic lawmakers reacted swiftly to the appointment. Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, denounced the choice in sharp terms, calling Miller a dangerous xenophobe. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer similarly labeled him the architect of the government’s most severe immigration policies. The adviser had also unreservedly supported his boss when pro-Trump demonstrators stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, to prevent the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

A Defining Test for the Executive Branch

The role of chief of staff serves as the primary gateway for information and access to the Oval Office. By placing an ideological hardliner in the position, the administration rejects calls for moderation from political opponents.

Speaking on X, Miller pledged absolute loyalty to the president and his mission.
