American voters rejected Donald Trump’s alternate reality during the US midterm elections, delivering punishing losses to Republican candidates up and down the ballot after a campaign defined by economic hardship and an unpopular war in Iran. In the final stretch before voting in hundreds of congressional races, Donald Trump had declared a new golden age of America
and insisted that the stock market had hit 88 all-time highs, while describing the conflict in Iran as not really a war because we’ve done very little fighting
. During an extraordinary speech at Washington’s Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool, Trump had urged Americans to pretend I’m on the ballot
and implored them to vote on his enacted policies.
As votes were tallied on Tuesday night, however, it became evident that voters were not experiencing the claimed golden age while filling up their cars and paying for groceries. Voters cited the economy, their inability to afford their lives, corruption under Trump, the Iran war, tariffs, datacenters, healthcare costs, and the administration’s aggressive deportation scheme as central factors in their decisions. Jim Conrad, a voter in Ohio, stated, There’s a war that nobody wants right now,
while Ron Miller in Kansas acknowledged that despite being for Trump, the president hasn’t done anything
to lower the cost of living. Todd Cox in Maine pointed to the disregard for the rule of law,
and previous Trump voter Linda Olson in Kansas said the president was working to make himself richer instead of really helping the people.
Stacey, a voter in Iowa, noted, I wanted to vote for no Republicans.
The Defeat of the Mirror World and Republican Fallout
Republican candidates suffered severely as voters treated the administration and its agenda as being on the ballot. Tom Galvin, a Republican on the Maricopa county board of supervisors in Arizona, observed that everything that was important
to the 2024 coalition fell by the wayside, noting the absence of the Epstein files, a lack of relief from inflation and gas prices, and the continuation of foreign wars. Previously, Trump had dismissed affordability concerns as a con job
perpetrated by Democrats.
Trump’s Defiant Reaction
Following the party’s collapse, Trump remained defiant and elevated Stephen Miller, one of the most controversial figures in his administration, to chief of staff. On Thursday, Trump wrote on Truth Social: I JUST WASN’T ON THE BALLOT. IF I WERE, WE WOULD HAVE WON IN A LANDSLIDE!
As reported by The Guardian, the president sought to distance himself from the outcome despite having previously demanded that voters treat his name as though it were listed on election day.
