Trump’s Election Interference Blocked by Courts

President Donald Trump’s extensive efforts to interfere in the 2026 midterm elections largely failed to alter the outcome of the vote, as courts consistently blocked his administration’s attempts to assert control over the electoral process and experts confirmed the election proceeded as scheduled.

Federal Interference Attempts Blocked by Courts

The Trump administration waged a brazen effort to interfere with voting, escalating concerns that the federal government would try to slow down certification of election results, a strategy that could create chaos when the new Congress is seated next year. Experts are certain the administration’s efforts to subvert America’s elections will not work.

These attempts included the Department of Justice filing lawsuits against states and the District of Columbia to obtain voter lists, which were overwhelmingly rejected by the courts. Federal judges have blocked efforts by the administration to interfere in elections, including 22 judges appointed by Democratic presidents and 12 appointed by Republican presidents, with 8 appointed by President Trump himself.

The DOJ also sued the Alaska Division of Elections over a ballot name issue, but a federal judge in Alaska threw out the lawsuit, writing that the Justice Department provides no workable plan as to how it proposes to segregate ballots cast and had failed to satisfy its burden to show that its alleged injury is redressable by a court order.

Administration Pressures States over Voter Rolls

Key tactics from the administration included pressuring states to turn over unredacted voter rolls and seeking to restrict mail-in voting. Some of Trump’s allies on the right encouraged him to invoke emergency powers to exert influence over elections, including potentially seizing voting equipment and sending troops to the polls, though election experts noted the cumulative effect of these steps was to ramp up anxiety about the vote and to erode voters’ trust in the system.

Despite these efforts, the administration’s loud political claims of large numbers of noncitizens on state voting rolls have shrunk to very tiny numbers once subjected to scrutiny, according to reporting from Mother Jones, and studies have shown there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud in United States elections.

Election Day Proceeds Largely Without Incident

On Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, voting experts’ deepest concerns largely didn’t materialize. The day’s relative quiet followed an anxious run-up in which the Trump administration pressed forward with unprecedented efforts to assert more federal control over elections.

While administrative issues cropped up here and there, as they do in each election cycle, election officials kept the public informed of the nature of each problem and the path to its resolution. November 3, 2026, was an extraordinary political event, and this was possible because, for the approximately 124 million voters who cast their ballots, this election ran like any other.

Post-Election Challenges Expected

Pro-democracy advocates are bracing for everything from lawsuits aiming to stop the counting of large batches of votes, to efforts to delay or challenge certification. The DOJ’s desperate moves to cast doubt on who won and who lost are expected to continue, with potential for more disputes and refusals to admit defeat for months.

Some of Trump’s allies have encouraged him to invoke emergency powers, though the House last refused to seat a certified winner in 1985 and House Speaker Mike Johnson has called the idea of going down this road “absurd.” The next step will come on January 3, 2027, when the new Congress convenes.
