Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 61-year-old man on suspicion of stealing approximately 135 million yen from automated teller machines (ATMs) in the city’s Chuo Ward.
The suspect, identified as Tsuyoshi Oyama, is alleged to have carried out a series of unauthorized withdrawals across multiple machines within the district, a central commercial hub known for its high concentration of financial institutions and corporate offices.
Investigators are currently analyzing the technical methods used to extract the funds. The probe is focused on whether the thefts were facilitated through the use of fraudulent bank cards, compromised account credentials, or other means of bypassing ATM security protocols.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has not yet disclosed the exact timeframe of the thefts or the specific banks targeted. However, the total amount recovered or missing is estimated at 135 million yen, marking a significant breach of automated banking security in the ward.
Police officials are now working to determine if Oyama acted alone or if he was part of a larger organized crime syndicate specializing in financial fraud and “cash-out” operations.
Oyama remains in custody as investigators continue to trace the flow of the stolen money.
