The town hall of Honfleur, in Calvados, has decided to toughen the rules for Airbnb rental owners. The reasons for this turn of the screw: the seaside resort is assailed by tourists, the permanent inhabitants can no longer find accommodation and real estate prices have exploded.

The port of Honfleur (Calvados), even in the rain, has a certain charm, and seasonal rentals are logically in high demand. Tourists love it, but locals have lost some of their quality of life. “I flee Honfleur in the summer and on weekends”, says a resident. Many apartments end up on internet rental platforms. The interest of renting for short periods is financial for the owners, but these tourist rentals are too numerous.

Since January 1, the town hall has submitted all rental requests for authorization. Only then does it allow the lessor to rent out his property for three years, renewable once. A “necessary condition to be referenced on rental platforms”, indicates Christophe Buisson, elected to the community of municipalities in finance and tourism. In 2019, the city of 7,500 inhabitants reached the record of 1,900 furnished tourist accommodation offers.
