There would be a turnaround in the Mikael Backlund case.

The forward and the Calgary Flames have finally started negotiations for a contract extension, reported TSN journalist Chris Johnston on Tuesday.

He added that both parties would intend to continue talks in the coming weeks.

However, the 34-year-old veteran declared this summer that he would not sign a new agreement with the Alberta organization at the end of the next season. He told the Swedish magazine “VLT” that he had taken all the time necessary to make this “difficult decision”.

Backlund spent all of his 14 seasons in the NHL with the Flames. During his career, the center player banked 492 points, including 185 goals, in 908 games.

Last season, the Swede offered his best harvest with 56 points, including 19 goals, in 82 games. The Flames, however, were left out of the playoffs.

On June 26, he won the King Clancy Trophy, which rewards community involvement, for his involvement with the Alberta association fighting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease).
