At the UTC La Ville in Vienna, Austria’s best young people won the coveted titles.

This year, the local young talents had the opportunity to collect points at five tournaments each as well as at the ÖTV youth championships indoor and outdoor in order to qualify for the masters of the BIDI BADU ÖTV youth circuit. From September 21st to 24th, this crowning conclusion to the most important national youth tournament series took place at UTC La Ville in Vienna’s 23rd district. And once again with an excellent line-up: “It was mostly the best from Austria at the start, especially in the younger age groups,” said Stefan Hirn, the organizer and head referee, who was pleased, together with tournament director David Bruckner, organizer Raimund Stefanits and Bettina Mottl from host UTC La Ville played a key role in the huge success of the event. On the part of ÖTV, sports coordinator and Billie Jean King Cup captain Marion Maruska personally took a look at the event and looked at the kids’ legs. All individual winners were able to look forward to being sent to an international tournament (ÖTV covers the costs for the player), the runners-up received non-cash prizes from BIDI BADU, and the third-place winners received the inspiring book “How to give up a dream for a life to win” by Austria’s wheelchair tennis ace Nico Langmann. A convivial, traditional Player’s Party on Saturday with sausages, French fries and drinks was also a must.

Ehrenberger with his only double win

“It was a successful closing event,” reported Hirn. “The positive thing was that we were able to play everything outdoors, despite the uncertain weather conditions. And Saturday wasn’t that great either, especially in the morning, but it worked out and the groundskeepers did a great job. From a sporting perspective, there were some perhaps somewhat surprising results, but the Masters has its own rules, with the group matches and the match tiebreak in the third set.” Particularly noteworthy was Julia Ehrenberger’s coup, the only Masters -Champion achieved the double. In the girls’ U12 final, the Viennese defeated Mia Neumüller (NÖTV) 7:5, 6:1, with whom she triumphed together in the doubles. With each score 2-1 in Siegen, the direct duel won was decided in favor of Ehrenberger/Neumüller and against Emma Thaler-Gollmitzer (KTV) / Alina Pesec (KTV). Among the boys of the same age, Ricky Kletter (WTV) somewhat surprisingly booked his place in the final thanks to a 6:3, 6:7, 10:6 against Luca Sageder (OÖTV), but lost it by the narrowest of margins 6:2, 2:6, 8 :10 against Jakob Mittermayr (OÖTV). However, Mittermayr missed the double with Sageder, because here too the direct comparison decided the doubles with 2:1 in Siegen – in this case for Dominic Messenlechner (TTV) and Badis Selmi (WTV).

Fight for every game: high tension among the U18 boys

In the girls U14 category, Kara Fronek (WTV) reached the final despite a two-set defeat against the bottom of the group, Petra Reichenbach (WTV), because the direct duel against Lara Linder (VTV) was decided by a score of 2-1 in each of the victories. In the title fight, Fronek showed her best side and took revenge for the defeats in the most recent encounters with a 6:3, 6:4 over tournament favorite Lea Haider-Maurer (BTV). However, the 13-year-old missed the double with Aurelia Schober (STTV) with a 4:6, 6:2, 6:10 in the ultimately title-deciding match against the two winners Marie Schuler (TTV) and Reichenbach. For the U14 boys, Gabriel Niedermayr (OÖTV) impressively lived up to his role as favorite, with four distributed 6-0 maximum penalties in the three group matches and a 6-1, 6-0 in the final game against Marcel Jelinek (NÖTV). He secured the double competition with Ferdinand Grasl (NÖTV). And in the girls U18 category, Julia Weissenböck (NÖTV) stayed in the group without losing a set and then took the crown thanks to a 4:6, 6:2, 10:7 over Johanna Andrea Corciova (WTV). The latter triumphed in the doubles with Georgina Pustelnik (WTV). It was incredibly exciting for the oldest boys, where both groups produced three players each with 2-1 wins. In some cases, the exact rankings were even determined by the games won. The final places ultimately went to Alexander Gschiel (BTV) and Simon Ritter (TTV), with the former clearly finishing better (6:2, 6:1). Double champions were Julian Jelinek (NÖTV) and Erwin Wansch (OÖTV).
