Twitter’s Rebranding as X Faces Challenges: Domain Blocked in Indonesia and Potential Trademark Issues

2023-07-27 19:20:41

The other day, Elon Musk decided out of the blue to rebrand Twitter – the social network is now called X. But the name change didn’t go smoothly.

Details

The Indonesian government has blocked X.com, Twitter’s new domain. All because of the previous owners, who associated it with porn and gambling.

In all likelihood, this is not a major problem and the issue will be resolved soon. The social network team has already contacted the Indonesian government to clear up misunderstandings. Nevertheless, 24 million Indonesian users are unable to log into their account and browse the social network’s feed, which Twitter’s competitors can take advantage of.

Also, this situation can be seen as an indicator of the unpredictability of Twitter’s transition to X.

Besides, the situation with Indonesia may not be the only problem with the rebranding. Indeed, Meta, Microsoft and other companies already have trademarks on X and might therefore sue Ilon Musk and his social network.
