The arrest of two individuals exposed a criminal gang that is dedicated to theft and theft of vehicles that they transport both to Honduras and back to Guatemala, as revealed by the National Civil Police (PNC) this Friday, March 15.

The two subjects identified as Welfred “N”, 39 years old, and Luis “N”, 34, were arrested in a raid in Barrio Nuevo, Morales, Izabal. The operation was coordinated by the Public Ministry (MP) and the PNC.

According to the official report, the two detainees were accomplices of an individual previously detained for the theft of a vehicle in Chiquimula.

The investigation of the case describes that the two subjects were involved in the theft of vehicles in Guatemala, with the purpose of transporting them to Honduras.

“These people belong to a structure that is dedicated to theft and theft of vehicles in different departments of Guatemala, operating to transport vehicles to Honduras and vice versa,” the PNC reported.

At the place of capture, significant evidence was found, including lockpicks and mobile phones that, according to the investigation entities, point to the participation of the detainees in criminal activities.

Likewise, a vehicle with identification plates, used for the illegal transportation of cars between the two countries, was confiscated.

The PNC indicated that the Criminal Investigation unit will continue with the investigations to dismantle the criminal network.

Last case

In November 2023, the PNC and the Prosecutor’s Office against Organized Crime also carried out an operation to dismantle a gang that altered vehicle registrations and then sold them at low cost on social networks.

The authorities raided a mechanics workshop in San José Pinula, where four vehicles reported stolen were found.

According to the investigation, the vehicles were altered in their registration and then sold through social networks at a price below the market price, which constitutes a scam.

Investigations reveal that the criminal gang modified the stolen vehicles, changing their license plate, chassis and engine numbers.

The authorities warned the population about this type of scam and called on them to report any suspicious activity.
