Two employees of the Metro company died this Thursday, February 3. As confirmed by the mass transport company, the accident occurred on the railway at the Sabaneta station.
“We deeply regret what happened and express our solidarity with his family, colleagues and friends,” the Metro said on its Twitter account.
At the moment no further details have been given about the causes of the event, but it is known that the victims are Gustavo Adolfo Atehortúa del Río and Carlos Mario López Correa, who worked in the infrastructure area (permanent road section).
Mayor Daniel Quintero said the accident occurred after a maintenance maneuver which resulted in the fatal accident.
The Metro is expected to provide more information about what happened in the next few minutes.
What happens at the station
From 9:25 am line A operates between the Niquía-Itagüí stations. The Metro announced the activation of the integrated routes contingency plan for users who need to move from stations without service: La Estrella and Sabaneta. The integrated routes of Caldas, La Estrella and Sabaneta will be reaching the Itagüí station.
On the stairs of the Sabaneta station, a police officer warns that there is no service. José David, a driver of an integrated route, says that they were warned about the situation after 10 in the morning. “Since that we are here. The buses are taking people to the Itagüí station,” he says.
Given the refusal to provide the service, users must take a feeder again. It was the case of us boys who got out of a vehicle and found out that there was no service.
No one knows for sure what happened. Outside the turnstiles, a group of contractors tasked with cleaning the system wait patiently. When they arrived, around 10 in the morning, they were told that they could not enter the platform. They do not know what happened, other than that “an incident occurred.” One of them notices that nothing has been explained to them. “We are not knowing what happened. They closed the station and we stayed outside, waiting. We’ve been here since 10,” he says. To kill time, they play games on cell phones or talk quietly.
