Building your own gaming PC can be a real challenge, especially when it comes to choosing the right components for the case. A Reddit user, despite two months of planning, found himself faced with a classic but costly mistake: purchasing a graphics card that was too large for his case. This mishap highlights the importance of checking component dimensions before purchasing and reading the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

A mistake that is too common for this player who wanted to build his gaming PC

Building your own PC in the age of YouTube tutorials, in itself, is not that complicated. Despite everything, certain basic errors continue to be talked about. The most classic of all: purchasing components that are too large for their casing. The years go by and graphics cards become more and more massive and more and more expensive. After spending a lot of money on pure components, many people are looking to save money on their case… and that’s a problem.

This is how we often see stories of people who cannot fit a component into their PC and who try maneuvers that are, let’s say, quite stupid (like breaking the case or even improvising with cardboard boxes for example). Most of the time, these kinds of problems happen to people who are novices and/or not very attentive. It is rarer to come across a user who, after claiming to be ultra meticulous, finds himself confronted with the harsh reality.

This is what a European Reddit user hiding behind the nickname EmperorPalpatine651 experienced. As he indicates in his message, the Star Wars fan has dedicated two months of his life to meticulously planning to purchase the perfect parts for his first gaming PC. With all the enthusiasm in the world, he decided to build his first computer with an NVIDIA RTX 4000 GPU as its centerpiece. However, when he bought all the necessary equipment and decided to assemble it, he was confronted with a sad reality: you understood it from the thumbnail of this paper and following these first two paragraphs, yes, its graphics card did not fit into the case.

In his post, the user briefly outlined his problem. As the title of the post suggests, he spent two months planning the best parts to build his first PC. According to him, his enthusiasm was the greatest of his entire life. However, he did not realize the size of the graphics card and it was impossible for him to assemble the computer the way he wanted. After the “mess”, he took a photo of the result and shared it with members of the Reddit community. Many took advantage of the situation to make all kinds of comments.

The more serious ones point out that the poor, hapless novice PC builder didn’t read the fine print of the product description which mentions installing the GPU in “specific positions.” It is therefore likely that many users have experienced this situation, since the graphics card is installed vertically and not horizontally. Anyway, next time the poor inattentive player will read the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations in more detail. Overall, people’s feedback remained positive, and, even if there was some mockery, it’s good to see mutual help on the internet.

Note that‘there is a simple method to know the dimensions of a component, and make sure it actually fits into our case. We invite you to visit the PCPartPicker site, which lists most PC components, in addition to comparators and simulations so as not to reproduce EmperorPalpatine651’s error.
