We talk about it regularly, the possibility of exceeding 1 Gb/s in Ethernet is one of the advances of recent years. And if Apple has understood it, a problem quickly arises: the switches. For a long time, models equipped with sockets over 1 Gb/s were expensive and rare. But in recent months, the 2.5 Gb / s is democratized.
Macs, Boxes… and switches
On the Apple side, everything is (almost) ready: the Mac Studio and Mac Pro integrate Ethernet at 10 Gb/s (two sockets on the Pro model) and the connection has been optional on the Mac mini for a few years . On portable Macs, USB-C is sufficient for 2.5 Gbps Ethernet — the adapters are worth less than $40 — and Thunderbolt is perfect for 10 Gb/s versions. In Boxes, both Orange and Free, Bouygues and SFR offer boxes with 2.5 Gb/s or 10 Gb/s Ethernet and associated offers.

And in the switches? It’s finally moving. For a long time, you had to make do with models with two 10 Gb/s sockets and eight 1 Gb/s connectors, without even taking into account the questionable look of some models. But the 2.5 Gb/s models are becoming more popular: D-Link, for example, has just announced the DMS-105 (€166, 5 ports) and DMS-108 (€240, 8 ports), equipped with 2, 5 Gbps. This is the public price, so the price in store should be a little lower since the brand’s products are regulars in promotions.
At QNAP, a company specializing in NAS, the bill is even lower: the QSW-1105-5T can be found for 125 € with its 5 2.5 Gb/s ports. For those who also want 10 Gb/s, the company even offers two variants equipped with two 10 Gb/s sockets. THE QSW-2104-2S (160 €) has two SFP+ slots and the QSW-2104-2T (just over €200) includes two 10 Gb/s RJ45 sockets.
It therefore becomes possible to equip oneself with multigig (more than 1 Gb/s) for a modest cost, which allows interesting gains with modern Internet connections as well as with the most recent NAS.
