Cops and thugs shared two days during the same bench of the Marseille criminal court, confronting the judges with the abuses of the status of police informant and, as the prosecutor said, with “an astonishing mix of genres and atypical personalities”. Now dismissed, two police officers from the Paris region, Sonia Cocouard, 45 years old, and Soufiane Ouguayour, 43 years old, were respectively sentenced, Friday April 12, to three-year prison sentences including one year suspended on probation and three years in prison including eighteen months suspended on probation – the fixed part being to be served under an electronic bracelet at home.

These convictions – short of the three years required by the prosecution – handed down in particular for the misappropriation of police files, sanction their close relationship with Salim Benyoub, nicknamed “The Jackal”. This drug trafficker, sentenced in Algeria to life imprisonment, was officially registered as an informant since 2012 at the Brigade for the Repression of Banditry in Paris and, since 2014, at OCRTIS, the former central office for the fight against narcotics.

In the early hours of March 16, 2018, 60 or 150 kg were stolen – we don’t know exactly – of cannabis resin and 100,000 ecstasy tablets stored in a box in Ermont (Val-d’Oise). Market value of the cargo: 400,000 euros. Immediately, Salim Benyoub suspects Mourad B., one of his old friends, of having stolen the address of the box. He will never stop tracking him and finding him, helped in this, according to justice, by his police friends whom he solicits for elements taken from the police files.

Staged execution

“The Jackal” recruits a commando in Marseille when he learns that Mourad B. is hiding there. On the night of June 6 to 7, 2018, this 53-year-old Lyonnais was kidnapped, thrown into the trunk of a car before being beaten in a cellar of a Marseille residence where his execution was staged. He will finally be released and will run, bleeding, to file a complaint. The four members of the commando were sentenced to sentences ranging from seven years in prison for the organizer of the punitive expedition to three years, one of which was suspended, for the driver of a vehicle.

Salim Benyoub, who now runs a small hairdresser’s shop in Meknes (Morocco), was sentenced to nine years in prison and, due to his absence during the trial, the court issued an arrest warrant. The real boss of this case, he was described by the head of the punitive expedition as a sponsor who had promised him 100,000 euros to recover the drugs and “eliminate” the victim.
