[周刊王CTWANT] On the occasion of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s visit to Russia, U.S. White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi from the 16th to the 17th to pave the way for the “Xi Xi meeting” and other matters. Wang Yi emphasized that the Taiwan issue is the first insurmountable red line in Sino-US relations. The United States must abide by the three Sino-US joint communiqués and implement its commitment not to support “Taiwan independence.”

Previously, Chinese President Xi Jinping was absent from the Group of 20 (G20) India Summit and was represented by Premier Li Qiang of the State Council, which was equivalent to announcing that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Conference (APEC) is the next multilateral occasion where the “Xi Jinping Meeting” may appear. US President Joe Biden expressed “disappointment” that Xi Jinping was absent from the G20 summit. Li Qiang briefly met with Biden on the sidelines of the G20. The relevant news was passively confirmed by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs after Biden revealed it.

“Archyde.com” quoted anonymous U.S. officials on the 17th as saying that at a critical moment in U.S.-China relations, Sullivan and Wang Yi held multiple rounds of meetings in the small European Mediterranean country of Malta from the 16th to the 17th. When leaders of various countries are about to go to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday (19th), Wang Yi will be absent from the United Nations General Assembly and is expected to visit Moscow on Monday (18th) to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov. Chinese President Xi Jinping will also be absent from the UN General Assembly, with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng attending. Foreign media speculated that Wang Yi might have stopped by Malta during his visit to Russia to meet with Sullivan.

“Xinhua News Agency” pointed out that Wang Yi and Sullivan conducted candid, substantive and constructive strategic communication around stabilizing and improving Sino-US relations. Wang Yi emphasized that the Taiwan issue is the first insurmountable red line in Sino-US relations. The United States must abide by the three Sino-US joint communiqués and implement its commitment not to support “Taiwan independence.” China’s development has strong endogenous driving force and follows inevitable historical logic. It cannot be stopped. The Chinese people’s legitimate right to development cannot be deprived.

It is reported that the two sides agreed to continue to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state in Bali, maintain high-level exchanges between the two sides, and hold Sino-US consultations on Asia-Pacific affairs, maritime affairs, and foreign policy consultations. The two sides also discussed measures to further support and facilitate personnel exchanges between the two countries, and discussed international and regional issues such as the situation in the Asia-Pacific region, Ukraine, and the Korean Peninsula.

China took the initiative to announce the meeting between Wang Yi and Sullivan and said it would “maintain high-level exchanges between the two sides”, showing that top Chinese and American leaders are willing to return to the negotiating table, and the “Xi Xi meeting” at APEC in San Francisco should be one of the important topics.
