WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate passed a $95.34 billion bill with aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan by a 70-29 vote early on Wednesday. The bill will now be sent to the House of Representatives, where opposition Republicans hold a majority.

The bill would allocate $61 billion to support Ukraine, $14 billion to Israel, $4.83 billion to support partners in the Indo-Pacific including Taiwan, and other areas of conflict around the world including Gaza, the West Bank and Ukraine. It also includes $9.15 billion in humanitarian assistance.

In the Senate, 22 Republicans voted in favor of the bill, far exceeding the 60 votes needed for passage.

Senate Democratic Leader Schumer said, “This is the first time in many years that the Senate has passed a bill that has such a significant impact not only on our national security and the security of our allies, but on the security of Western democracies.” It’s been decades,” he said.

The Senate passed a procedural motion on the 12th, clearing the final hurdle to proceed to final consideration. However, the vote was delayed until sunrise on the 13th because eight hard-line Republican lawmakers who opposed aid to Ukraine continued to give speeches through the night.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy welcomed the Senate’s approval, saying, “America’s support brings Ukraine closer to true peace, restores stability to the world, and brings greater security and prosperity to all Americans and the entire free world.” ” he posted on X (old Twitter).
