UAE Announces 3 Benefits Foreigners Will Get From 5 or 10-Year Golden Visa

The United Arab Emirates has officially detailed the core perks of its five- and ten-year Golden Visas, confirming exemptions from local sponsors, extended travel privileges abroad, and streamlined family sponsorship rights designed to attract global talent and long-term expatriates.

Long-term residency in the Gulf nation carries distinct operational advantages that separate it from standard employment or tourist paperwork. According to details published on the UAE’s official website, the Golden Visa is a long-term residence visa designed to allow foreign talent to live, work, or study in the country. The government describes it as a scheme that comes with exclusive benefits not available to ordinary visa holders.

Beyond standard professional and investor paths, the framework accommodates specialized categories, including retirees and financial contributors to Islamic charitable endowments. This broad expansion underscores an ongoing shift to anchor international talent, investors, and philanthropists directly into the country’s economic and social fabric. The UAE positions the Golden Visa as a scheme for foreign talents, suggesting it targets individuals with specific skills, achievements, or financial standing that meet the country’s eligibility criteria. The visa is available in two durations, either five or ten years, offering long-term stability for those who qualify.

Core Perks and Extended Travel Rules for Golden Visa Holders

Holders of the five- or ten-year Golden Visa unlock three structural advantages that redefine expatriate flexibility. First, recipients are not required to have a sponsor, a condition that typically governs how most foreign nationals live and work in the UAE. Removing this requirement gives holders significantly more independence and flexibility in how they manage their lives in the country.

Second, the Golden Visa allows foreigners to remain outside the UAE for longer than the standard six-month limit without losing their residency status. Under normal circumstances, an absence of more than six months can result in a visa being voided, making this benefit particularly valuable for those who travel frequently or split their time between countries.

Third, holders can sponsor their family members, covering both spouses and children. This means a Golden Visa holder does not have to navigate separate visa processes to keep their immediate family together in the UAE.

Philanthropic Giving and the New Waqf Donor Residency Pathway

In a new initiative expanding the scope of its long-term residency scheme, the United Arab Emirates has announced that donors to Islamic charitable endowments, known as Waqf, will now be eligible for the coveted UAE Golden Visa. The announcement followed a strategic agreement between the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA-Dubai) and the Endowments and Minors Affairs Foundation (Awqaf Dubai). It was made public during GITEX Global 2025, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

“The agreement represents a pioneering model of government collaboration that empowers endowers to play a vital role in community development,”

Lt. Gen. Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA-Dubai

The move allows both UAE residents and international donors to obtain a ten-year renewable Golden Visa under the category financial supporters of humanitarian work, as outlined in Cabinet Resolution No. 65 of 2022. Officials said the decision aligns with the country’s focus on encouraging high-impact philanthropy and positioning Dubai as a global centre of generosity and social innovation. The visa, they added, is intended not just as recognition for donors, but as a practical means of attracting global contributors to humanitarian causes. Awqaf Dubai Secretary-General Ali Mohammed Al Mutawa said the initiative was a natural extension of Dubai’s vision to position endowment work as a key partner in sustainable development.

In Islamic tradition, Waqf refers to a perpetual charitable endowment—whether land, cash, buildings, or other assets—dedicated to serving the public good. Its defining feature is permanence: once donated, the asset cannot be sold, gifted, or inherited. Instead, it is managed sustainably, with the income used to support causes such as education, healthcare, or religious institutions. In the UAE, Awqaf Dubai regulates and promotes the Waqf system, ensuring that endowments comply with Sharia principles and are directed transparently towards genuine social needs.

To qualify for the ten-year residency under the humanitarian work category, donors must meet specific eligibility requirements, which include a minimum donation of AED 2 million to a certified Waqf or humanitarian project, a university degree or higher qualification, a nomination from Awqaf Dubai or an authorised humanitarian body, and the submission of proof of contribution and identity documents.

Financial Thresholds for Expatriate Retirees Seeking Long-Term Stability

Thinking about retirement abroad? The UAE isn’t just a playground for investors and professionals, it’s also emerging as a smart, tax-friendly destination for retirees. With its 5-year renewable retirement visa, financially stable expatriates aged 55 and above can enjoy long-term residency without needing a job or running a business. Beyond the numbers, the visa offers clear perks: no income or property tax, access to world-class healthcare, and the freedom to bring your spouse and dependents along for a secure, comfortable lifestyle.

The UAE’s retirement visa program provides a 5-year renewable residency option for foreign retirees who wish to settle in the country after their working years. The policy is applicable across all emirates, with Dubai offering an additional customized version of the program. It was officially introduced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) in December 2024, as part of a broader federal update to residency and ID regulations aimed at creating more flexible long-term visa pathways.

In addition, applicants must fulfill at least one of the following financial conditions: owning property in the UAE valued at AED 1 million or more ($270,000 or more), having savings of at least AED 1 million ($270,000), or receiving a minimum monthly income of AED 20,000 ($5,400). For Dubai residents, a special case applies with a lower income threshold of AED 15,000 ($4,050) per month. Applicants are also required to submit a bank statement from the past six months to confirm financial eligibility.

The retirement visa is issued for a five-year period, is renewable upon continued fulfillment of the eligibility conditions, and offers a pathway for long-term settlement.
