According to the Khaleej Times, American forces struck two Iranian launchers stationed on Larak Island. Washington defended the move by asserting that Iran was actively preparing to lay additional mines within the strategic Strait of Hormuz—an international waterway that President Trump had recently declared free of mines.

Tehran responded swiftly on Monday. Iranian state television cited the country’s army claiming direct drone attacks against three separate installations: two military bases utilized by US forces in Jordan and the Al Minhad Air Base located in Dubai. While the UAE Ministry of Defence formally denied “false media reports” regarding a successful missile strike on Al Minhad, officials confirmed they successfully tracked and intercepted an incoming drone over territorial waters.

Meanwhile, the Jordanian army reported that its air defences successfully intercepted eight incoming missiles on Monday, though official statements published via the Petra News Agency omitted any direct reference to the origin of the projectiles. In response to the widening theatre of operations, the foreign ministry issued a stern caution declaring that the US and the parties supporting its military actions bear full responsibility for “consequences of escalation”.

Sovereignty Violated: The UAE Shifts Its Diplomatic and Financial Footing

The August 31 drone interception represents the second time in less than a fortnight that UAE airspace has been directly tested by cross-border projectiles. On August 18, country-wide emergency alerts sounded as air defence batteries detected two ballistic missiles launched from Iran targeting maritime navigation routes. One projectile fell outside territorial limits, while the second fell within sovereign waters.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mofa) issued a sharp condemnation labeling the latest drone launch a “blatant violation” of national sovereignty and security. Holding Tehran “fully responsible” for the cascading consequences, the Emirati government had already taken the dramatic step earlier in the month of suspending all trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran.

Dr. Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE President, argued that the prevailing containment architecture had failed. In statements reported by local media, he noted that the persistent strategy of targeting Gulf states and Jordan demonstrates the failure of current diplomatic frameworks, pointing out that the expired 14-point Memorandum of Understanding failed to provide a practical and acceptable roadmap.

“The policy of targeting the Gulf states and Jordan has proven to be a failure,” Dr. Gargash noted, emphasizing that the fragile reality of “neither war nor peace” remains unsustainable for regional stability.

Economic Tremors and the Unresolved Fate of Hormuz

Beyond the immediate military calculations, these exchange of strikes have driven up oil prices as anxieties mounted over the safety of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command maintained that its initial strike on Larak Island was explicitly designed to safeguard civilian mariners and protect the free flow of global commerce against aggressive mining operations.
