The UAE praised the efforts of Turkey and the United Nations to extend the agreement to transport Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea for the third time, and considered it a positive step that enhances global food security.

This came in a statement issued by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thursday, and was reported by the official news agency, WAM.

The ministry said, “The UAE welcomed the extension of the agreement of the parties to the Safe Shipping Initiative for grain and foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports, and the implementation of this agreement for an additional two months.”

She added that the UAE “appreciated the tireless efforts made by the Republic of Turkey and the United Nations in this regard.”

The UAE Foreign Ministry considered that “this extension is a positive step that will contribute to alleviating food shortages and enhancing global food security.”

The UAE also expressed its appreciation to both the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Ukraine for their response to these efforts.

And she expressed her hope that “these endeavors will contribute to peace between the two countries,” stressing “the importance of converging views to prevail stability and peace at the regional and international levels.”

On Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the extension of the grain deal for an additional two months, starting today, Thursday.

The extension announcement was welcomed by several international bodies, most notably the United Nations, the United States and Britain.

Last July, Turkey, the United Nations, Russia and Ukraine signed an agreement in Istanbul to resume grain exports from Ukrainian ports to help address the global food crisis, which was temporarily halted after the start of the Russian war in February 2022.

The deal has been extended twice since its first signing in November 2022 and then in March 2023, and this is the third time.

The agreement has allowed the export of more than 30 million metric tons of grain and foodstuffs from Ukraine since last August, according to the United Nations.
