From the Octagon to the Ice in Los Angeles
Following an initial rinkside experience that left him thoroughly impressed by the speed and physicality of the sport, Padilla returned to the arena environment to work as a guest commentator on the Spanish-language radio broadcast on La Primera 1330 AM, nhl.com/es reported. The featherweight standout joined a growing list of combat sports notables—including Chuck Liddell, Alexander Volkanovski, and Cub Swanson—who have maintained a visible presence around the NHL franchise.
Rather than observing from a purely casual standpoint, the fighter analyzed the similarities between combat sports and professional hockey. Padilla detailed how the aggressive battle for space along the boards closely mirrors the tactical positioning required to clinch an opponent against the cage in an MMA bout. “Mi estrategia sería usar mis brazos largos y agarrar con la izquierda las hombreras,” Padilla explained regarding how he would handle a fight on skates, noting he would follow up with right-hand uppercuts and looping hooks to force an opponent to duck.
Tactical Parallels on the Rink
Padilla noted that if he were to suit up on the ice, his preferred position would be defense. Operating on the blue line would allow him to protect space and utilize his physical frame effectively during board battles, nhl.com/es reported. He also pointed to fellow fighters like former champion Yair Rodríguez as a natural fit for hockey due to the exceptional lower-body balance developed through taekwondo training.
