Ukraine launches counteroffensive in south

Ukraine has launched a counter-offensive in the south of the country to regain control of territory occupied by Russia. According to Ukrainian sources, long-range missiles were fired at targets and an ammunition depot in Nova Kakhovka near Kherson was hit. 52 Russians were killed.

According to the administration installed by Russia in the region, at least seven people were killed and around 60 others injured. This was reported yesterday by the Russian news agency TASS, citing the head of administration Vladimir Leontiev. The information might not be independently verified.

Leontyev further said that a warehouse containing saltpeter was hit. The nitrate can be used both as a fertilizer and for the production of explosives. Rockets from the US mobile missile system HIMARS were used in the attack. Ukraine did not initially comment on this.

Ukrainian government officials have announced that they intend to recruit up to a million soldiers for the counteroffensive. Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Wereshchuk had already asked the civilian population in the Kherson region on Sunday to leave the area.
