Ukraine recalls its military helicopters from Africa

Africa Intelligence informs Ukraine’s decision to withdraw its military helicopters from Mali, where they were used as part of the UN peacekeeping mission. The decision was made in connection with the situation in Ukraine itself, the publication says.

The publication believes that these actions jeopardize the combat capability of the international peacekeeping mission.

The armed conflict between government forces and separatist and Islamist militants in different groups has been ongoing in Mali since 2012. How notes RBC, the situation in the country escalated after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in Libya.

In early 2013, the UN Security Council established the Multidisciplinary Integrated Stabilization Mission. The goal was declared to support the political processes in the country and fulfill the tasks of ensuring security. As part of the mission, about 13,000 military personnel from different countries were sent to the country. Since the beginning of the mission in Mali, 260 members of the peacekeeping mission have died.
