Ukraine’s Transition to Non-Russian Nuclear Fuel: Latest Updates and Future Goals

2023-09-10 13:20:00

The United States transferred the first batch of nuclear fuel to Ukraine. It will be used by Energoatom for nuclear power plants. This was stated by the head of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko.

“Today, Energoatom for the first time loaded fuel for the 440th reactors (VVER-440 fuel units – editor’s note). The fuel was manufactured by the American company Westinghouse together with Ukrainian specialists,” Galushchenko said on the Rada TV channel. According to him, nuclear fuel supplies are also expected from Finland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Thus, Ukraine plans to completely abandon nuclear fuel supplies from Russia.

Ukraine does not have its own technologies for the production of nuclear fuel. However, in March, the Energoatom company set itself the goal of establishing its production within three years, reports TV channel 360. Ukraine refused to cooperate with Russia on nuclear fuel supplies following the start of the special operation.
