Ukrainian Drone Attacks Kill Eight, Ignite Oil Depot in Russia
Ukrainian drone strikes targeting logistics and energy infrastructure in Russia killed at least eight people and wounded more than 60 others during an overnight aerial campaign, according to Russian regional officials. The attacks, which occurred on July 18, 2026, struck facilities in the Tambov and Moscow regions, marking what officials described as the highest casualty toll from Ukrainian strikes on Russian soil in three years.

Logistics Hubs Targeted
The primary targets of the operation were two sprawling warehouses owned by Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer. In the city of Kotovsk, located approximately 475 kilometers southeast of Moscow, a drone strike hit a Wildberries warehouse, killing seven night-shift workers instantly. Tambov regional governor Yevgeny Pervyshov reported that 25 people were wounded in the attack, with injuries ranging from serious to critical, largely caused by shrapnel. A second Wildberries facility in Elektrostal, roughly 50 kilometers east of Moscow, was also struck. Governor Andrei Vorobyov of the Moscow region confirmed that 37 people were wounded in the Elektrostal attack, with one individual later dying in the hospital. Images released by Russian media showed a large fire burning at the Elektrostal site, while Wildberries CEO Tatyana Kim characterized the event as a “terrible night” for the company.
Kyiv’s Strategic Justification
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the strikes in a statement, identifying the two warehouses as significant logistical facilities
used by Russia. According to Zelenskyy, these sites were utilized to supply sanctioned components essential for the production of drones and navigation equipment.
This assessment was supported by Serhii Kuzan, chairman of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre, who told the BBC that the Wildberries network serves as a vital component
of Russian logistics. Kuzan noted that the platform has been used by Russian volunteers to procure military equipment, including body armor, walkie-talkies, and drone parts.

Infrastructure and Energy Strikes
Beyond the retail warehouses, Ukrainian forces targeted energy infrastructure. In the city of Noginsk, north of Elektrostal, a drone strike sparked a fire at an oil depot. Governor Vorobyov reported that two people were injured in the incident, which also forced the emergency evacuation of a nearby maternity hospital and a residential building. Ukraine’s General Staff later stated that the Noginsk depot was a strategic target because it supplied fuel to the Russian armed forces.

Casualty and Defense Summary
The human impact of the strikes extended beyond the logistics hubs: * Kotovsk: 7 killed, 25 wounded. * Elektrostal: 1 killed, 37 wounded. * Noginsk: 2 wounded; evacuations triggered by oil depot fire. * Vladimir: No casualties reported after a drone hit a residential building, sparking a brief fire. The strikes represent an intensification of Ukraine’s ongoing campaign to disrupt Russian military logistics and energy supplies as the conflict enters its fifth year. In retaliation, Russian forces launched a “massive” attack on Odesa’s port infrastructure, which resulted in at least one death, three injuries, and damage to a vessel flying the Antigua and Barbuda flag.
