AA / Istanbul / Mohammad Al-Ragawi

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over Sudanese army chief Abdelfattah al-Burhan’s call to dismiss the international organization’s envoy, Volker Perthes.

Antonio Guterres “is shocked by a letter he received from the president of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council” in which he calls for Volker Perthes to be removed from office, said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric , in a press release.

“The Secretary-General is proud of the work done by Volker Perthes and reaffirms his full confidence in his Special Envoy,” added Dujarric.

In his letter, Al-Burhan, head of the country’s ruling Sovereignty Council, expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of the UN envoy, Sudanese media report.

The army chief accused Perthes of spreading misinformation about reaching consensus on the Sudanese Framework Agreement, when the reality is in fact quite different.

Signed on December 5, 2022, the framework agreement provides for a two-year transition period and the appointment of a civilian prime minister by the political parties that signed the agreement.

Al-Burhan also accused the UN envoy of being the source of negative perceptions towards Sudan within the international organization.

At least 863 civilians have been killed and thousands more injured since April 15 in clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to local doctors.

A disagreement had emerged in recent months between the Sudanese army and the RSF over the integration of the paramilitary group into the armed forces, a key condition of the transition agreement reached between the political groups and the army. Sudanese.

Sudan has not had an effective government since October 2021, when the army deposed the transitional government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and declared a state of emergency, a decision denounced by political forces as a “coup of state”.

Sudan’s transition period, which began in August 2019 after President Omar al-Bashir was ousted, was supposed to lead to elections in early 2024.
